"I needed to work with them and not push them away"

About: CGL Birmingham / East Hub

(as a service user),

When I first attended I just thought more faceless faces here for the wage only and won't be interested, I believed that deeply, that this wasn't helpful and done nothin for me.

It was only when I got serious about trying to get clean and accessing the help offered that I realised none of that was true - and it was just me who wasn't listening, and nothin was being done for me bcus I wasn't helpin myself and not taking the help offered. I wasn't ready.

My worker is bang on and and does what she can for me. Basically I'm sayin it's not the workers job to get u clean, that's on yourself 100% but until and when you do decide to make that scary move they will support you and try to make the transition from addict to recovering addict as easy and simple as possible.

I needed to work with them and not fight and push them away to truly get the help I 100% was able to access.

Good luck people.

Dear Peterp24

Thank you for reaching out to us to share your experiences.

I’m Lydia and I’m responsible for listening and responding to people’s feedback.

Thank you for sharing your really open and honest personal experiences with us.

We appreciate that for many different reasons, it can take people time to feel serious about addressing their addiction, and that before this happens many people can have doubts about the support that is on offer. This is something we accept as being part and parcel of addiction and recovery and in these situations, showing people that our doors will always be open to them despite how they may be feeling at the time is key.

It sounds like despite your negative beliefs about our service, you didn’t give up on the possibility and goal of recovery from addiction and I’m really glad that when you reached the self-realisations you needed in order to move forward, that you developed an openness and willingness to accept the support we can offer.

I will make sure that I share your personal account with the team who has supported you. I’m sure everyone will really appreciate the important insights you have shared, the praise you have given to your worker and will want to commend you for the changes you have made to not just your outlook, but the impact this has had on your life too.

I hope other people who may be experiencing doubts for the same reasons get to read your words, in the hope that they will encourage others to reflect on and change the things that only they can control, so they can move past their fears and fight through the barriers that are holding them back.

I hope you continue to receive the help you need from our service for as long as you need it. I’m sure if you approach any future challenges and decision making, with the open and honest attitude you’ve adopted, that you’ll achieve everything you set your mind to.

Thank you once again for getting in touch with us and I wish you all the very best.

Take care of yourself,

Lydia
