"Patient Waiting Times"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / GP Out of Hours service University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

On visiting Christmas Eve, as requested by Dr Burrows from out of hours service, my husband has an eye problem which is very painful. We weren't  told how long the waiting time would be. So far its Christmas morning, we have been here now for 8hrs and my husband has only been at triage. There are 3 other patients before my husband, apparently, as he is in the same category.  Well what is the category?

We do understand that there are ambulances coming in with real life threatening emergencies...but come on Wishaw general, maybe you could think of a better way to run your department. I have seen your poor receptionists get it in the neck from some people waiting. Not fair.

Why can you not have a designated doctor who deals with these non life threatening categories? Get them seen and get them out of A & E as quick as possible. Makes sense to me and I'm sure a lot of other people would agree. I think it is an utter disgrace to have people waiting that length of time. In my opinion, there is no excuse for the sick not being attended to in a time frame of say 2 hours.

It is an absolute shambles.

Dear Swift08,

I am sorry to read that your husband had such a long wait to be seen in our Emergency Department at Wishaw and this falls below the standard we strive to achieve within our department. However, waiting times are exceptionally high at present due to the demands on the service and unfortunately due to the high number of life-threatening Emergencies to the department we are unable to allocate a doctor to lower acuity patients as you have suggested. I sincerely apologise for the distress that this has caused.

I hope that your husband has received the care he needed and is recovering well.

Kind regards

Julie.
