"Traumatic labour, terrible aftercare"

About: Kettering General Hospital

Anything else?

I began contracting at 2am On 09/04/13 1 week late so contacted labour ward as was too much for their repeated suggestion of paracetamol and a bath. Got told to come in but i wasnt progressing so sent home with no pain relief , returned back to delivery suite that night as i still couldnt cope, lovely midwife saw me was very supportive but was still not progressing enough so sent home with 2 codeine (which made me sick) but was relieved someone was finally listening to me and realised i was in a lot of pain, readmitted a few hours later and allowed to stay in, the midwife i had from the morning until about 7pm was fantastic! She always checked on me and after over 36 hours of no sleep at this point gave me pethidine so i could sleep! After a good few hours in the bay was taken to a delivery room (which was fab) and given gas and air. Still not enough progression so a doctor came and broke my waters to get things moving, it was about then that the dr told us the baby was big! Had not been told this at all throughout pregnancy, infact was told the opposite so very shocked also found out he was back to back which explained the contractions being agonising from the start! At my request anaesthetist came and gave me epidural, which was great until it stopped working when it was discovered it had gotten tied up in my back, was then after 50 hours of labour sent for a c section. I had gotten to the stage where i was begging for a c section as i was exhausted and could no longer cope. However after the c section i was transferred to Rowan ward and thus is where it went downhill and resulted in me discharging myself against medical advice! When i got on the ward it was lovely was brought cup of tea and toast and made to feel welcome. I was given pain relief when needed and seemed rine. The midwife only attempted twice for a few mins to help me breastfeed before a bottle was suggested which i agreed as my baby hdnt eaten yet. No further breastfeeding support was given which upset me as i had wanted to breastfeed my child. The night was the worst. Already scared about being alone with baby after major surgery. I sat up all night in pain with baby placed on me as was not settling, in the end i had to get up and ask a midwife to get a bottle as someone had moved the call button right behind my bed so i could not call for help all night! Ended up in tears all night and a midwife eventually came and checked on me as baby wouldnt settle in cot they took baby off my chest barely saying a word swaddled him and put him to bed then walked off, I also asked for someone to change bedding as had blood loss, i ended up doing it as no one came! The midwive who discharged me was very rude and i dreaded them coming to see me.i am planning to have my next baby if i have anymore after dreadful experience at another hospital, after a traumatic experience some kindness and consideration wouldve been nice! Never had labour discussed either!
