"Hysterectomy following repeat of cervical cancer"

About: Royal Lancaster Infirmary / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Following two smaller operations at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary to remove cervical cancer, in 2009 and 2010, and a further operation last May, to deal with other gynaecological issues, I had to have a hysterectomy.

The support of the consultant, Mrs Sambrook, made so much difference at a time when I was scared and feeling very alone. Her ability to answer all of my questions (and I had a list) reassured me that I would be receiving the very best medical support. What I didn't expect was the kindness and dedication of the exemplary nursing staff on Ward 16 of the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. The media highlight examples of poor care within the NHS, but I experienced thoughtful and personalised care and support from all of the staff that I met during my stay. From the wonderful nurses, to the cleaning staff that checked I could reach my drinks, everyone was professional and yet caring and friendly.

I am now fully recovered, but remain grateful for the efforts of all of the team, in ensuring that my medical, physical, practical and emotional needs were acknowledged and supported...thank you all
