"Impossible to have lunch or a cup of tea"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I attended the physiotherapy department in February as part of a pre-admittance for knee surgery at 10am. I had a further appointment at 1pm in the pre-assessment department. Unfortunately there was no time between one appointment and the other so it was impossible to have any lunch or even a cup of tea.

I then had to attend the X Ray department and it was 3pm before I left the hospital.

This is too long for anybody without a break and I had left home at 9: 15am.

Perhaps the appointments could be better placed to avoid this happening and allow patients at least enough time for a sandwich or tell them to fetch food and drink with them.

Dear Noble750

Thank you very much for contacting us re your recent experience at one of our pre-admission clinics. I am very sorry that you found yourself unable to have some refreshment during the clinic due to the range of assessments that were undertaken.

We actually carry out the clinics this way to try to ensure that all necessary testing is performed, thus avoiding the need for patients to attend more than once.

However, it has been identified quite recently that the current structure means that there is the potential for patients being unable to have lunch or a coffee break, therefore, the service is reviewing the content of the clinic letter to inform patients that it would be helpful to bring a snack with them to avoid this.

I hope that this is a satisfactory response but I would be very pleased to discuss your experience more fully if you wish.

If so, please contact Hazel Dykes on 01387 244146

Thanks again for your comments.

Best wishes

Hazel
