"Amazing care for orthognathic (jaw) surgery"

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital / Maxillo-Facial surgery

(as the patient),

Due to an overbite and an open bite, I had to have orthognathic surgery on my lower jaw.

The main part of the process took 3 years- the healing obviously takes longer. Having your face changed and such a traumatic operation is obviously horrific and was a very distressing time- however the orthodontists, surgeon and staff at the hospital were fantastic.

I had braces for 2 and a half years before having the surgery and had the braces removed 7 months after the surgery. I was an anxious patient- I often called up for appointments because I felt that something was wrong or sometimes just because I was distressed with having the braces! The staff never made me feel like I was being silly though and always took the time to reassure me.

After the surgery I went back repeatedly to say that I felt I was dying, but was always reassured an made to feel better, never dismissed. It wasn't just the orthodontist and surgeon - it was the staff at the reception, the orthodontist nurses, and nurses who looked after me in the hospital during my recovery.

This operation has really changed my life, and although it was an upsetting and distressing time, the hospital did all they could to help me. I am so grateful for everything they did for me and continue to do.

Amazing service, NHS at its best.
