"We are too short staffed to give him the care he..."
About: Royal Surrey County Hospital Royal Surrey County Hospital Guildford GU2 7XX
My elderly uncle was admitted by ambulance to the A&E department on Wednesday evening suffering with a high INR level and apparently needing a vitamin K transfusion. We were told this by nursing home.
We tried unsuccessfully to ring A&E all evening.
Today I finally got through to be told that he was still in A&E and needed to be admitted but there were no beds. I explained he had several medical conditions including dementia and was told that although he needed 1:1 care it was not available due to staff shortages. He wanders off if not supervised, has toile ting issues, cannot speak and chokes on food if not given support with eating and is now in an unfamiliar environment, lacks nursing care and will be there until a bed can be found. The nurse I did speak to just told me he had been there for more than the allocated 4 hours!
No one could tell me what was the medical problem, the treatment, the prognosis or even who to talk to. I don't live locally and find this lack of care appalling.
What do I do?
