Having been referred to St Marks's after living with crohn's disease for 13 years, 5 major operations and 10+ minor surgeries, I cannot speak highly enough of the treatment I have received.
I was referred in Jan 2013 and by the middle of Feb 2013 I had been seen twice in outpatients, had a day case procedure and had a proctocolectomy and ileostomy formation.
I feel from start to finish I have received excellent care and support from the Professor and his team who operated on me right down to the admin staff who have organised all my post op care nearer my home town.
My stay on Frederick Salmon ward was made all the more bearable by the understanding and high level of care I received from the staff caring for me. I feel I speak with some authority as a patient who's experienced many a hospital stay and as an NHS nurse myself. The care was of an exceptionally high standard and I felt safe and fully involved in the care I received.
I was impressed with the organisation of my discharge and the handing over of my stoma care to my local hospital went smoothly with them contacting me a day after I got home with all the relevant information passed on from St Marks.
Being in a hospital which actually understood crohn's disease not just physically but the emotional impact as well really helped and was worth the distance I travelled. I just wished I had been referred years ago.
