"Review for my mother in law"

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital

Anything else?

Im utterly appualed with the attitude of this ward, whilst my mother in law has been there we have visited serveral times at different times of the day and found the treatment to be pretty much the same. She has been extremly poorly to the point of near death. On one of the occasions my mother in law was in extreme pain, I requested pain relief for her a nurse approached in a huff and said she "wasn't her patient but the nurse who was her named nurse was in with the family as they were making a noise about something???" who did this lady think I was?

Anyway that same night we had been called to the ward as they did not think she would last the night (hench I couldnt understand why no pain relief had been given), when we got there nobody seemed interested in us either way.

Another night we got a phone call saying nobody had been to visit and that they needed permission to put mitts on her hands to stop her from pulling the tubes out same was agreed, and we also found out that a family member had been there just before they called us.

Next day she didnt have the mitts on and the nurse complained to my husband that she was still fiddling with the tube, my husband explained the phone call the night before and the nurse said it was the first time she knew about it.

The communication on the ward has been shocking, the dignity in care I dont believe is there. A lady in the next bed to my mother in law obviously has a dementia and is constantly left with food out of reach, on one occasion we where there several members of staff walked past her hanging half way out of the bed which I found stunning, I reported it to the care assistant she said she'd sort her then went off shift and the lady was still in the same position!

My mother in law has complained that when she has had "accidents" the staff have said why didnt you buzz for someone to come in, she had just nobody came. She feels that they look down on her, which at the minute she could do without.

I wouldnt be so quick to thiink this wasnt the case either as when we have been there the nurses have been hanging around the nurse station with the care assistants talking about their home lives done up to the nines. Call me an old fashioned nurse but quite frankly this ward is a joke and I would be ashamed to call myself a nurse working here!

We are clearly concerned to note these comments and would be pleased to arrange to investigate if the family would like to contact us. The email address is pals@midyorks.nhs.uk
