My son's ENT operation was cancelled at short notice. The reason given was the anaesthetist did not know how patients with the 22Q11 syndrome (which my son has) would react to the anaesthetic.
I think it is unacceptable and unprofessional to cancel this operation at short notice without them finding out about 22Q11 and the likely impact and contact us to discuss it with us beforehand.
If they had they might have understood the emotional impact the cancelled operation would have on a child with 22Q11. I also find it unacceptable that it was left to an administrator, who had not knowledge of the case or what we might expect as a follow-up, to contact us to tell us that the operation was cancelled - this should have been done by a medical professional where we could have had a proper discussion about the issue and been included in the decision making process.
I also think it unacceptable that once the operation was cancelled we have not given an immediate re-appointment - either for a new operation date or at least to discuss the situation with the consultant and anaesthetist.
