"Extended waiting time..again.."

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

Anything else?

Seems my Grandmother had to wait once more last night as she was instructed to attend the hospital in order to have a suspected broken hip x-rayed. Arrived in good time only to have numerous delays added to her already long waiting time. As if to appease her the hospital decided to perform ESG and various other tests, of which the visiting doctor had advised was not necessary, as they'd only just recently had them taken.

Waiting time including the x-ray performed - 5 hours. Not good enough!

Not only did it make an already uncomfortable experience for my Grandmother more distrssing, but my patient mother who was also in attendance, ended up having a mild hypoglycemic attack due to her low sugur levels, through the prolonged waiting time.

Response from North Tyneside General Hospital

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch with us.

We are really sorry to hear about your grandmother's experience.

We appreciate that your grandmother must have experienced discomfort, and we were also very sorry to hear about the problems your mother had, so can fully understand your frustration with the situation you describe.

It might reassure you to know that this is not our usual standard of care and that we do track the length of time patients wait. For suspected hip fractures almost 90% of our patients have their x-rays within the hour. Cleary this hasn’t been your grandmother’s experience so it would be helpful for you to contact us with the details. This would allow us to look into your grandmother’s case specifically and provide you with more explanation as to why this wait occurred. We would also be able to explain why the further assessments were carried out.

Please call Anne Kennedy, Deputy Director of Medicine and Emergency Care, on 0191 293 2730.

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.
