"Terrible experience at Bev Stokes Day Surgery, Northern General"

Last month, I was a patient in the Bev Stokes Day Unit at the Northern General hospital in Sheffield for vascular surgery. After coming round from surgery I was in a lot of pain and my blood pressure was very low. I was told beforehand that the recovery time was 45 minutes to 1 hour approximately, yet I ended up in recovery for 4 hours. At no point during this time was there an investigation into why my blood pressure was so low. During the following week, the pain persisted, and when the nurse at my local surgery examined me, it was discovered that I had been bleeding internally and my wounds were infected.

I feel let down by the surgeon, who should have taken better care in examining me after the operation, and by the nursing staff at the hospital who should have been more alert to my concern regarding the pain I was in.

In conclusion, it was a terrible experience and it would have to be a matter of life and death before I consented to having surgery done at the Northern General's Bev Stokes Day Surgery Unit again.
