After being admitted from A&E late at night onto the EMU ward, I would just like to say how good the nurses were.
I had a bit of a rough time in A&E after being on a trolley for 5 hours; I was shook up and frightened from being rushed in by ambulance.
Firstly, the Nurses in A&E were great. They were so comforting, for example, holding my hand and rubbing my arm whilst having my blood pressure taken, which for various reasons I find difficult, and, talking to me as if I was a friend, making jokes and making light of things. They tried to keep me as updated as they possibly could about the Doctors' movements and the tests they were doing.
I fully appreciate that the hours that you spend in A&E are not the faults of the nurses, however, they kept apologising for the time I spent waiting for the Doctors to return. Also, without any hint, they called me by the name everyone calls me rather than my full Sunday name, which was comforting as it made everything seem more familiar.
When admitted to the EMU ward in the early hours of the morning, the Nurses here were also great. I was offered a drink straight away, which was very much appreciated after 5 hours in a hot A&E. They offered to help me with the covers on my bed, and like the nurses in A&E, made jokes and light of things, even having me laughing at one point. They ensured that I could reach my buzzer and that I was comfortable as I could be.
The following day, we were discussing what had happened the night before and how the same thing happened to one of the nurse's friends; it seemed that the nurses wanted to talk to you and it was nice to share experiences. It also seemed that all the other patients on the ward were receiving the same great care.
Although problems with Doctors were experienced, especially a language barrier, the nurses who I came into contact with were fantastic.
"Kind and caring EMU and A&E nurses"
