"Thorough investigations"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital (Paisley)

(as a relative),

My father was admitted to A&E on Friday with possible symptoms of a TIA. He was later admitted to Ward 4 and discharged on . The care he had in A&E, the admissions ward and Ward 4 was excellent - he was thoroughly tested, including both CT and MRI scans, and staff were good at explaining what was happening when we asked. The only reason Dad was in so long was to wait for the MRI scan and its results, so this was frustrating but we understood the reasons. We are now reassured that there was no TIA, that his heart and brain are in good working order, and a referral has been made to ENT to sort out pan sinusitis which showed up in the scans and could be the cause of his problems.

I am very happy with the standard of care from doctors, nurses and other ward staff. My only criticism is of the night he was admitted. When the porters came to take him to the ward they were chatting to each other and didn't bother talking to us to tell us where they were going. They set off at such a speed that my mother, who is not very mobile, had no hope of keeping up and my Dad, already distressed, could not attract their attention. I ended up running down the corridor shouting to make them hear and tell me where we should go. This was in complete contrast to the porter who arrived on Friday 14th to take Dad for his scan who was chatty and cheery and told us exactly what was going on. Porters are dealing with sick, worried people and need interpersonal skills just as much as the medical staff.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to provide your very kind feedback.

I will ensure that this is passed on to those involved and I am sure that they will be very pleased to read your comments.

I am sorry that this posting was not acknowledged at the time, we had a break in our use of Patient Opinion, but we have now resumed doing so, and I thought it was still important to acknowledge your posting and where appropriate to pass comments on.

I am also very sorry that you had a poor experience with one of our porters although also very pleased to read that this was in contrast to your experience with other porters on another day.

Once again, thank you for using the Patient Opinion feedback system, it is greatly appreciated.
