"Please offer earlier appointments to those who..."

About: St Albans City Hospital

What I liked

I am currently under the care of the Gynaecology team.

I had my first appointment here in early June. I was very impressed with the consultant who took time to listen to my concerns and diagnosed an additional problem which I had just put up with over the years. I had additional tests arranged and was due to see the consultant for the results of these tests, and to find out what surgery I would need.

I suffer from Trigeminal Neuralgia, and I had a very severe attack this morning which rendered it impossible for me to leave the house. I phoned to cancel my appointment only to be told that the next available appointment is the 15th September.

I know that this cannot be right as I saw this consultant earlier this month and had an appointment arranged for today at that appointment so I don't understand how the next available appointment is two and a half months away.

What could be improved

There needs to be earlier appointments available for people who have to cancel their appointments because of illness. Two and a half months is an unacceptable time to wait.

Response from St Albans City Hospital

Thank you for feedback on your patient experience to date, through our NHS Choices page. Unfortunately, without specific details on you and your case it is difficult to comment - although you would have been offered the next available appointment.

Nevertheless, if you contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), they will do their upmost to investigate if there is anything we can do to alter your current appointment wait, and if not, at the very least explain the current process. They can be contacted by email: pals@whht.nhs.uk, or by phone on: 01923 217198.
