"most nurses just dont care anymore, its just a job..."

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

What I liked

No visitors at meal times, and meals looked good and plenty to choose from. The domestic staff were very friendly and always helpfull.

What could be improved

Most of the nursing staffs attitude.

Anything else?

I was put on the wrong ward due to the correct ward being busy, however i sure was made to feel that i didnt belong as soon as i asked for pain relief, alot of the nursing staff were very unplesant and every thing took ages as they would go on other missions and i was left waiting and waiting, even through the night but plenty chit chat went on at the desk! I also overherd a nurse speaking to a 84 yr old very nice lady as she couldnt get herself up for the loo in the night, she and me both ended up in tears at the way she spoke and totally upset her, if i could have got up and helped her i would have! I sure feel that the caring has gone right out of nursing and its now just a job and god help people in their care.

Thank you for providing feedback on your experience of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I’m sorry you were unhappy with the attitude of our nursing staff and therefore feel unable to recommend the hospital on this occasion.

Our ward managers and matrons work hard to ensure a caring environment for all patients, and if this was not your experience then we are sorry and apologise for this. All staff are trained in their caring skills as it is an important part of the day to day running of our wards.

I will ensure our ward managers and junior sisters are aware of your comments and work with their nursing teams to identify any issues and ensure training is given.

If you would like us to investigate the specific issues you have mentioned, we would need you to raise this with us directly. If you would like to do this please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 953 0667.

Once again thank you for providing feedback for us.

Ian Renwick

Chief Executive of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust
