"Long wait for an ambulance following my son's motor bike accident"

About: Great Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Patient transport service

(as a relative),

My son had a motor bike accident ,and was left in the road for 45mins before a ambulance came.We did have the rapid response team come, but they did not have a ambulance to get him to hospital. When the ambulance came it was not well equiped, only having 1 blanket.

Luckily although he had a head injury the outcome was favourable.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us your views on our service and I am sorry to hear of your son’s accident. We always strive to deliver the highest quality of care, and it is regretful that on this occasion you felt that things could have been done better. We aim to respond within 8 minutes to all serious emergencies and use our rapid response team to do this. Occasionally due to the demand elsewhere on the service the time it takes to send an additional ambulance to take someone to hospital following the initial treatment is longer than we would like. On these occasions the attending paramedic is still able to provide all necessary treatment, remains in contact with our communications centre and is able to escalate matters if they believe it is warranted.

I am not able to comment on the ambulance only having one blanket, but I will look into this as we have a minimum list of equipment we expect all our vehicles to carry. There may well have been a clinical reason why it was important not to let your son get too warm. I am pleased that your son recovered from his accident.
