"Second issue with my operation"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I had been given a date for my shoulder operation so I called the secretary to confirm I that I had been booked into theatre and a bed two weeks before. I was told both had been booked. Arrive at 10am for my op, get admitted, gown etc and told I was on the afternoon waiting list. Time passes by and I hadn't seen the doctor or anaesthetist or had bloods taken. I was told by the nurse that they were in theatre and would be to see me when they could.

Asked nurses four times when was I going to be taken and explained this had happened to me before. I was told that I had a bed so the theatre would know that I was waiting. At 4. 30pm I asked to speak with the senior nurse but she was unavailable. Then my consultant walks into my room, who I hadn't seen for 2-3yrs and tells me there had been a lot of emergencies and that I wasn't getting my operation. I asked why they didn't tell me earlier as they should of known they weren't going to have time to do my op. They replied what they had told me was all that they knew about it. They said for me to go home and I would get another appointment in the post. Explained that this was the second time this has happened but they just left the room. I was left feeling angry, upset and not well as I has been fasting since 6. 30am and it was now 5pm. My mother in law called the ward and she was told by a senior member of staff that I wasn't booked into theatre that day. The exact same thing happened to me on the before, they had even put my cannula in my arm in the morning and had my gown on and was told late afternoon that I hadn't been booked into the theatre. Thinking it was a one off mistake I didn't complain the first time it happened. I have two young children who get very upset when I go into hospital, my husband has to take holidays from his work and my parents had to delay their holiday so they could be there to look after my children. I totally understand that there are emergencies but there is no excuse not to tell me about it. Lack of communication has really let me and my family down. I don't know if someone hasn't done their job right or a new system is in place and it has some faults for this to happen twice. I still need to have this operation but don't want to have to go through this for a third time.

I am not surprised you do not want to go through this for a 3rd time. I am so glad you have let us know what has happened. You are absolutely right sometimes we do have to cancel less urgent surgery for more urgent but to not communicate all day and leave you fasting for so long is inexcusable. I can only assume it was a particularly challenging day for the team with a lot of emergencies, which can occur unpredictably throughout the day. I am so sorry this has happened.

I wonder if you would feel comfortable to give me a call so we can talk about this and I can look into it more? I too want to make sure this does not happen again and that you receive the surgery you need. You can contact me via the switchboard on 0345 456 6000.
