"Friendly and caring and talked everything through"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

Had a lump one my back, forgive my spelling here but it was something called a lipoma. A fat type lump.

Went to the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline, Fife today to have it removed.

The staff were absolutely brilliant. No other way to describe the staff really, they were brilliant.

Friendly and caring and talked everything through before hand and during the operation.

Part way through the surgeon cut into an area that hadn't been numbed fully and I cried in pain. Straight in with another squirt of local aneasthtic and made sure I was okay before carrying on.

The Only negative thing for me was the time. I was told to be there for 12noon but didn't get taken to theatre until 4pm.

For me better planning and time management "might" ( And I do say "might" as it's a hospital and things can change in an instant) have seen me only need to arrive for 2pm to cut down on how long I was kept waiting and getting bored.

Dear Happy Camper

It's really very much appreciated that you have taken the time to let us know about your experience in the Day Surgery Unit at Queen Margaret Hospital. It's great to hear that the staff were able to talk you through everything so well and also be described as absolutely brilliant, friendly and caring. It's what we all strive to be when looking after patients. We do understand that coming into hospital can be a very anxious time for many reasons but we do our best to ensure we do not cause any unecessary anxiety or pain so I am glad to know that the surgeon reacted immediately when you were obviously feeling pain. Sorry to hear you had a long wait, this can often cause some frustration and anxiety, and it sounds like you have unfortunately been later on the theatre list. However the main reason for a standard admission time is so that the surgeon can see you before you go through to theatre because as you say things can change very quickly so it ensures any changes to the theatre list can be accommodated. For future reference please let the nurse in charge know if you are bored/anxious and they can offer you some helpfull choices and remember that there is free wifi in the unit should you wish to bring an electronic device. Saying all of that I'm sure that staggering admission times could still improve the patient experience for some theatre lists.

Thanks again for your feedback, I hope you are making a good recovery,

Best Wishes

Esther
