"Told to wait until 20 weeks to hear heartbeat"

(as the patient),

I went for my second midwife appointment and am currently 17 weeks. I was expecting to hear my babies heartbeat at this appointment as everyone of my friends who have children got to hear theirs from 16 weeks.

I was told that this would not be possible as there is a chance it would not pick up babies heartbeat and due to SIGN guidelines this isn't recommended.

I explained how disappointed I was as this is something I had expected and everyone else I know had the opportunity to hear this. The midwife said sorry but there was nothing that could be done.

I have now gone away feeling extremely anxious and disappointed. I have been told I have to wait until after my 20 week scan for this.

If it is indeed usual practice to wait until after 20 weeks, this should be consistent throughout Scotland.

Today's appointment has left me feeling anxious, disappointed and apprehensive about my future appointments with this hospital.
