"These services provided a lifeline"

About: Leverndale Hospital / Mental Health New Stobhill Hospital / Skye Unit (Glasgow Adolescent Inpatient Unit)

(as a parent/guardian),

Unfortunately my son was affected by depression which required hospitalisation and close monitoring. He was a patient in Skye House for 4 months. Thankfully he was able to be discharged home with support from the HIT Team and CAHMS. These services provided a lifeline to my son and to our family resulting in a positive outcome for my son.

I cannot thank the staff in Skye House, HIT Team and CAHMS for all the support they gave to us. I would especially like to thank my son's case manager Karen who is based at Barrhead CAHMS. She has been an absolute star in ensuring that the treatment and access to services my son needed during crisis was speedy and appropriate to him and to us as a family. She has made herself available to us and treated us with the utmost empathy at a time which could not have been darker. She is a credit to Mental Health Services.

My son did experience an episode where he wished to take his own life. As a result of this and due to a lack of beds in Skye House, he had to be admitted to an adult mental health ward in Leverndale Hospital. Although his admission was essential and the staff in ward 3 were so kind to him, this should not have happened. There is a shortage of beds in child and adolescent mental health. My son has now transferred to adult mental health services for monitoring as he is now 18.

I work in a small team within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Part of the team’s role is to support patients and carers through our feedback systems which will help to improve the services we provide. On Patient Opinion, I support Lorna Gray, Patient Experience Public Involvement Project Manager, and Niall McGrogan, Head of Patient Experience Public Involvement.

Dear tmcl

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion about your son's experience of care. This must have been a difficult time for your son and you as a parent. I am pleased to read that there has been a positive outcome for your son and the difference that the care he was given by our staff, especially Karen, made such a difference to him and to you.

I will ensure that your kind words and comments are shared with the staff in our Mental Health Services. They will be delighted to receive your feedback.

Best wishes
Lisa
