"A&E triage"

About: Birmingham Midland Eye Centre (Bmec)

I attended a&e at 9.15 on a Sunday morning with the hope of seeing somebody to assess my eye as I felt something had gone into it on Saturday morning , it had become irritated and blood shot and watering and had also started flickering from the irritation, I explained to the receptionist that I thought something had entered my eye but not sure what it was , they passed me to a triage nurse who asked me the same questions and I explained again , they asked to look in my eye and looked in the corner with a small torch from their pocket and said no there is nothing in there and I would need to return for an appointment as not deemed as a emergency and said the soonest was Tuesday , I said is there no way I could be seen today they said no that was the soonest and recommend I buy eye solution from the chemist and wrote the names down

By 3.15 my eye was waterering and my eye lid Was slightly swollen so I called the department to speak to staff nurse to ask if it would be possible to see me today as my eye had definitely got something in it , they were uncaring and unsympathetic towards me and said from triage it had been deemed as a none emergency and flickering and soreness of the eye was not a emergency , I explained this was caused by something in my eye ,

I asked if it was possible to bring my appointment forward to Monday , obstacles again and the answer was no I had to ring in the morning to see if they had a cancellation

I rang Monday morning and was told there was no cancellations , I explained situation and asked if it would be possible to call me if a cancellation arised, they said no they were to busy seeing to patients and booking appointments

That's for the help !!

I attended Tuesday to be seen by a very nice person who did my checks before going in to see the eye doctor , I explained the situation and to what had happened on Sunday , they said is your eye swollen on the lid I said yes and it had been really uncomfortable and was watering profusely and that whatever was in there I had not removed with eye lotion recommend

I was then passed to a very nice person who looked at my eye and found some small black particles ( which may have come from some building work in my home ) and simply removed them from under my eyelid , it had caused an allergic reaction and dry eyes and was prescribed 3 eye treatments

So days of prolonged suffering and soreness could have been avoided if I had simply been seen in a&e ( I would not have minded how long i needed to wait )

I feel looking at me with a torch over the counter can not see under your eyelid or small particles to cause such discomfort

It affected my work as I had to attend Tuesday and lost time from work and

I have suffered for two days and my eye is red raw and looks awful

Feel very let down

I am sorry to hear your comments about your experience at our Trust. Our staff follow set procedures for all patients attending our eye A&E department. I apologise that you found the staff to be unhelpful during your first visit, but I was pleased to hear that you received the proper care and treatment you needed when you returned. I will make sure that the department is made aware of your comments. Best regards, Toby Lewis, Chief Executive.
