"Disgusted by the reception people"

About: The Royal London Hospital / Maternity

I'm pregnant and have been trying to get an appointment with the hospital. My GP has faxed the referral letter twice and proved to me that they send it with a confirmation receipt so I had to call the hospital twice if they received it or not and they told me they still didn't receive any letter so so instead of them sorting it out they kept on telling me to ask my GP If they can send it again and then for me to call them back again so eventually I got phed up because it ended up 2 months for me patiently waiting for my first hospital appointment. When I came to the antenatal ward reception they were unbelievably rude knowing that I was pregnant for 4 months roughly one person in particular had a very disgusting attitude and was very unwelcoming as a receptionist I think you should always have a welcoming vibe to patients and be polite and give them the information or advice without getting annoyed or just stare at patients and gossip with other colleagues. I felt very very very uncomfortable with the receptionists giving me an attitude and knowing that I was pregnant too, had no heart or whatsoever. Also instead of apologising or being emphatatic about the situation that the hospitals made a fault and the GP, the receptionist kept arguing with me about how they sometimes just don't get the letters from GP even though they get their confirmation they just kept denying it. The receptionist seemed the only person to have a problem with me and other patients and created a very negative vibe in the waiting area and with the other reception collegues when they were all gossiping about kept staring back at me.

Knowing this situation happened I feel very protective about any doctors information I will get in future, I have no trust in doctors and hospitals anymore whereas I feel like they should be a place for patients to go to with their problem, sickness and anything else.

I'm quite young, 20 years old maybe that's why I'm treated in this disrespectful way but I think the hospitals should hire people very carefully, friendly, helpful, polite people that have knowledge and the qualifications needed as some people that work there seem to not even enjoy their job and be passionate about helping out patients, they seem more interested in gossiping and making people feel uncomfortable.

We're sorry your experience at the hospital wasn't to the usual high standard we strive for on a daily basis.

We pride ourselves on our safe and compassionate care and for you to not feel you received this is unacceptable and we can only apologise for this.

If you would like to discuss your experience further, then please contact the PALS Team by email: pals@bartshealth.nhs.uk

Kind Regards,

Barts Health NHS Trust
