"I felt all my dignity went out the window"

About: South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as the patient),

The technician turned up and he seemed to me to be more interested in making thier notes then sorting my pain relief out. It was only when I said could my details such as phone number doctors surgery wait until pain relief had been given why waiting for an ambulance as they was only in a car.

They then waited for the crew to come up and I said I could not walk down two flights of stairs.  They made me go down two flights of stairs on my bottom, bumping down the stairs while screaming in agony.

I feel like I was not treated with dignity and respect.

I felt all my dignity went out the window having to go down like this when they could of got a chair to lift me down. I have worked in care and I would never dream of asking a client to go down the stairs in this way while in so much pain. I felt it was totally degrading and disgusting to be treated in this way.

Dear Ella

Firstly, I should like to thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about our service, which is very much appreciated. I am so sorry and very disappointed to hear that you had such a poor experience and that you felt you were not treated with dignity and respect in your hour of need.

This is of serious concern to us and I should very much like to be able to look into and address the issues you have raised. I wonder if you might therefore be able to contact me to provide further information to enable me to do this, either by telephone via our switchboard on 0300 123 0999, or by email to sarah.songhurst@secamb.nhs.uk. I would reassure you that we are very keen to learn from our patients’ experiences, and to put measures in place where possible to ensure our care and treatment is improved as a result.

I do hope that you have now recovered well from this episode and I hope to hear from you soon.

With thanks and best wishes, Sarah Songhurst, Deputy Chief Nurse
