HI, my mum came in with a broken hip a couple of weeks ago, she was operated on quickly and was doing very well apart from some confusion relating either to codeine, a UTI or possibly general post operative delirium as this occurred about 24 hours after she had the op though she was fine at first. She was taken off codeine & given antibiotics which I was able to request to be given straight away rather than wait till the evening drug round which I thought was very flexible and sensible.
My mum spent a couple of nights not sleeping well and wandering around, she was in the special supervision ward and had to be helped as she walked around the ward and at times was determined to escape as she had some weird delusions. The nurses very sensibly let my dad and me come in and sit quietly with her which helped a lot and again I am very grateful for their flexibility
As regards nurses one particular nurse was very nice and the physio, also another nurse was really lovely. My mum took a big shine to a third nurse and was happy to follow instructions they gave though she didn't take to some of the others so much while she was in her funny mood.
Anyway although I was quite worried about the transfer from hospital to home as she was going to be taken to my brother's in Hexham this went fine and she was ok in the car, also the physio has panned out ok and a nurse is visiting daily from the doctor's surgery so this is great. She has a zimmer and crutches and is progressing fine now
The only thing I was unhappy about was not Ward 12 but A&E where it seems my mum was sat in a wheelchair for about 6 hours because there were no beds or trolleys to lie on. I know things are v difficult in the NHS but I know this is not good and also she was very uncomfortable so if someone could pass this on it would be great,
In every other respect amazing care on the budget you get off the miserable government, hank you very much for being so kind and caring and professional and I know my mum & dad would say the same
