"Rude staff"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Radiology

(as a relative),

I feel compelled to write about the treatment of my mum.

My mum attended radiology for a outpatient ultrasound.

After her ultrasound she felt well, went to the toilet and made her way to leave. Walking along the corridor outside Room 5 ultrasound she suddenly became very sick. Vomitting several times with no warning. Not only was she covered in sick the surrounding area was also. Obviously embarrassed she was then met by a nurse, who asked whether she would not be better doing that in the toilet, followed by huffing. As another nurse came to help they proceeded to talk over the top telling the nurse 'she's' got it everywhere.

Yes. Yes it would have been much preferably to be sick in the toilet rather than in front of several people in a busy corridor.

There was certainly no respect, dignity or compassion shown.

Now not only has my mum been worried sick about the ultrasound and subsequent results she now has the embarrassment of today and the way she was treated to deal with.

Very disappointed.

Dear fellow nurse,

I am very sorry to hear of your mums experience whilst attending for an ultrasound at Hairmyres hospital. I fully understand your mother's embarrassment around the situation and please pass on my apologies to her regarding the the staff's attitude to her.

Would it be possible for you to give me a call on (01698) 366087, Or 07796 681242 in order that I can obtain further details to allow me to investigate the situation further?

I would be very keen to ensure that this situation does not arise again.

Thanking you in anticipation.
Peter

Dear Fellow nurse,

Thank you for getting in touch to discuss your Mum's poor experience with me. Irrespective of you being a healthcare provider yourself, this is still a daunting process when raising concerns and I'm very grateful for the opportunity to investigate and hopefully help avoid this happening again.

I am truly sorry as I said on the phone that your Mum had to experience a lack of care and compassion in such a manner especially as she was on her own for the appointment too.

Although I have not been able to identify the individual person by the description given, I can assure you that I have discussed the incident with senior staff who were on duty that day.

All staff present agreed that no one should have been treated in this manner and all will strive to provide a person centered, caring and compassionate service.

Thank you again for sharing your family experience and I wish you and your Mum well for the future.

Kind Regards

Gwen
