"Staff need educating"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

Despite the fact that staff are polite and respectful I can't help but feel frustrated. I overheard a physio telling someone hypermobility syndrome pain is caused because the brain is confused. Not true at all. I have hypermobility syndrome and live with the pain daily from dislocations, sprains and strains amongst other causes. I felt degraded to be told that my joints don't dislocate. They do. I know my body and I've had doctors agree with me so why on earth a physiotherapists thinks belittling me by denying it is acceptable, I'll never know. Physiotherapists, while vital in healthcare, need to remember that patients know their own bodies. It saddens me to know that this is a common belief amongst physiotherapists despite the NHS website stating joint dislocations as a symptom. It's no wonder I just agreed with everything to get out of there fast. I would rather suffer and find alternative ways of managing pain (e.g. Painkillers) than be belittled in this way and told I'm lying when I say I dislocate. Shocking behaviour from staff who are meant to be integral in my rehabilitation. Really need to take a good hard look at the services you provide, this is why so many of us don't ask for help.

We are sorry that your experience of the Physiotherapy Department has not met the high expectations we set for our service. Effective communication between therapist and patient is essential in maintaining trust and co-operation in the rehabilitation process - but we acknowledge we might not get it right every time. Positive feedback about our staffs demeanour is great to receive but we acknowledge we also need to know when we fall short in order to improve our services.

If you would like to discuss this matter further you will be able to reach me through the Physiotherapy Department line on 0191 5699028.

Jane Parnell,

Superintendent Physiotherapist
