"Upsetting visit"

About: James Paget University Hospital / Accident and emergency

Firstly, I have been to this dept before and the highest praise for them. However, I feel I must give my thoughts now. In November, my adult daughter who lives with us was taken to JPH. At the time, she was confused, inarticulate and had been stumbling around our house that morning. I had footage on my phone to show. The previous week we had sat in A&E all day and after a CT scan, were told she'd had a stroke. 2 days after that, following an MRI, we were told it wasn't a stroke but the combination of her mental health meds.

After seeing the doctor, and someone from the MH team, they decided there was nothing they could do as there was nothing wrong with her. During this time, she had been sleeping on the sofa in the room they left us in. When she wanted the loo, she was stumbling everywhere.

I am post cancer, and not as physically strong as I used to be but I was expected to get her home, when she could hardly stand. She'd had dangerous behaviour in the morning but they didn't want to know, and when I asked for a second opinion, it did not go down well.

I took the incredibly hard step of saying I was going home without my daughter. If they felt she was fine, that there was nothing wrong, they could send her home - I couldn't physically cope. The doctor then said to me "that's right, you go - leave us to pick up the pieces as usual". I went to speak but they didn't want the know. I went to my car and sobbed my heart out at that remark. I cared for my youngest for 21 yrs, she has a rare syndrome. I'm very involved in the care of a daughter who has hepatic cancer and schizophrenia and whose twin brother I lost three years ago. I have been a carer for most of my life and after cancer, I'm physically unable to do it anymore. When I got home, I was given similar treatment by a nurse telling me my daughter would sit in A&E until I picked her up. I stated that I had no legal obligation to care, that I can't physically do it but they didn't want to know. I went and picked her up. The words of that doctor has made me bitter. I don't ever want to set foot in the A&E again. I've met wonderful staff there but it just takes one person - I wonder if they gave any thought to what they'd said - probably not. I won't forget it though.

I am so sorry to see your comments and how you felt about what was said. Whilst I can see that you aren't keen to visit again, would you be prepared to talk to someone in our Patient Advice team? It may be that this member of staff won't be aware of the impact they had - they have been under huge pressure with extra patients coming in and it may be that this has had an impact - if we can discuss it could be something we can learn from. If you would like to take this forward, please get in touch with the team on 01493 453240. I hope we hear from you.

Ann Filby, Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs
