"Amazing staff in A and E"

About: Arrowe Park Hospital / Accident and emergency

My recent visit to A and E with my elderly father, who had chest pains, only confirmed headline news articles about packed A and E departments frantically trying to process a ridiculous high volume of patients without the correct amount of staff. I can not praise the staff enough for their patience and respect to all patients and families. after spending from 12.30 pm to 10.30pm in Aand E triage area being moved from bay to bay by apologetic staff my father was finally moved to the acute assessment bay (trollies). i finally felt safe to leave him as staff assured me he could not leave unnoticed- this had become a growing concern due to father getting distressed and threatening to leave partially due to his short term memory loss and confusion about what was happening as he'd forgotten about his chest pain but repeated blood tests were showing he needed to be admitted due to a rising enzyme. i rang at intervals to see if he had moved to a ward. Infact he was not admitted to ward 32 until 5pm the next day! I am not blaming the staff at all as everyone had done the best they could in the face of adversity but surely this can not go on. My father is now home with medication and a visit to clinic in the future and I feel it is the best place for him as he lives with me. My biggest fear is having to visit A and E again and going through all the trauma of excessive waiting time again. If there were more community nurses able to deal with elderly people in their own home only going to a ward if absolutely necessary it would be so less traumatic for both patient, family and free up staff for the most critical patients.Once again I must praise the staff on triage bays especially one who found us sandwiches and tea whilst keeping up our spirits and kept me sane whilst dealing with my increasingly confused father.
