"Disappointed and let down"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital / Maternity

This seems to come as a shock to maternity triage on level 12, but not all babies have read the rule book on the correct manner to enter the world. This was my second baby, my first was born at CBC. I arrived at 7 am to be told I was not in established labour , I went for breakfast at costa, the pain was becoming intense and not wanting to labour in public I returned to level 12. After a long wait I was again seen just before midday and again I was told I was not in established labour. Without a ve exam I was told to go home. This was based on the fact that my waters had not broken, and that my contractions were not lasting for a full minute as they should. I tried to explain that the contractions were extremely intense and painful and that my waters never broke with my firstborn either. I decided to stay around the waiting area, and was told I could wait in the friends room if I liked. I contined to have unbearably painful contractions, I was screaming at this point, and despite asking my husband to get help it took another 15 minutes for anyone to come. 10 minutes later, just after 13.00 my daughter was born in the friends room. (Just over an hour after I had been told to go home) apart from 2 puffs of gas and air right at the end, I had had no pain relief, I was left to labour with no support - I was scared and not listened to. The fact that the unit was really quiet, with no other women in triage that I saw, just adds to my frustration. On the plus side I cannot fault the care that I had on level 13 when I did get up there and they delivered my placenta and stitched me back together. I only wish I had had them supporting me in my labour too. Alls well that ends well, but I was not listened to, I feel assumptions were made about me, and I am shocked that such a busy maternity unit should take such a lazy attitude in caring for its women. I could not possibly recommend that anyone else have the experience that I had.

I am really sorry to hear of your experience in maternity triage.

The lead Midwife for the area would really like to address the issues raised. I understand this may be difficult for you to do but it would be really help to improve our services.

You can contact PALS on pals@bsuh.nhs.uk or on 01273 664511 and they will arrange an appointment with the antenatal lead midwife.

Best wishes

Caroline Davies

Deputy Chief Nurse
