"Traumatic Nursing Care Experience Received"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Gynaecology

I was admitted last May 2016. I was very anxious and worried of going through a major surgery. My family and I arrived on a Sunday to be admitted and my surgery was booked for the following day. As I entered the ward, none of the staff had greeted me even just a simple smile, I was instructed to wait to their admission and/or waiting room. I waited for 3 hours to be seen and none of the staff had at least updated me of what's happening. I asked one of the staff and notified them that I have been waiting for long and only to find out that there's no available bed for me and I was transferred to another department and staff are clueless about my pre-op procedure. My bowel prep was given quite late and i'd been up to the toilet until 2am. Had my operation the next day and was being transferred to the Ward in the afternoon. The night staff who looked after me are absolutely caring and professional. However, the care I received from the day staff are terribly poor. My BP was quite low and I was feeling nauseated on Day 1, notified one of the staff but nothing was being done. My wound dressing was being removed by a nurse auxiliary on Day 1 using unsterile gloves. None of the nurses on duty have checked my wound except for my 2 attending surgeon. I was discharged on day 5 with a low haemoglobin and nobody gave me any advice of what I should do. I was being asked to stay in the visitor/patient waiting and discharge lounge by 10 am and waited for 6 hours for my discharge letter and medications to be given to me. The care I received was appalling and upto this day, each time i remember how I was treated by the staff just put me in tears. The treatment and care I received from the anaesthetic team was excellent.
