"Attended A&E Saturday 14th January 2017"

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital / Accident and emergency

I arrived at A&E at 8am with a wound that had burst due to fluid build up from surgery to remove the sentinel node as I have been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer (op5/1/17). It started well as I was taken into the triage from the ambulance...they checked the wound which was still oozing, they put a small dressing on that did not cover the wound and before I left it was already appearing through and leaking out, they were more interested in ordering their bacon or sausage sandwich as that was all the staff were interested in !!! The triage nurse told me to go into the waiting room, I questioned this because of infection but they said it was fine. I went into the waiting room to be hit with the smell of a poor man who had defficated himself and seemed delirious, others coughing etc, I went to reception with my concerns (also now eating their sandwich)but was told there was nowhere else to go...Eventually called through after 3 hours to have bloods taken and told a surgeon was on their way...Another hour later the surgeon came in and said they could not do anything and I needed to see my breast care team. I said surely an open wound is just that and needs sealing to avoid infection but they said they weren't a breast care specialist. I pointed out this wasn't were the tumour was removed from and if it was on my tummy/leg would they leave it ...The surgeon put a dressing on that was unsuitable and I said I had waited four hours for this and had better dressings at home ...exposed to more infection unnecessarily as the ambulance guys said it needed closing...On Monday after several changes of dressing over the weekend I had stitches am now on antibiotics and when I saw my consultant yesterday they were horrified by the lack of care and will be making a formal complaint as a surgeon should have closed the wound as infection.was a high risk
