"The wait was totally unacceptable"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My husband had a heart attack one evening. The ambulance arrived at East Surrey Hospital at 9. 00pm. The staff were lovely and doing their best.

We were transferred at a ward  the following day - 17 hours after arrival! We waited in A & E for 17 hours, all night and half the following day. My husband was given a comfortable bed but I sat for the 17 hours on a hard chair. The wait was totally unacceptable.

Dear cockatoo,

Thank you for sharing your story, it must have been a very worrying time for both you and your husband and so it is good to hear that you felt our staff treated you well and were doing their best. Like many other Trusts across the country our hospital is currently experiencing significant operational pressures, safety is our highest priority and we do our very best to prioritise patients based on need. We understand that the wait can be long and uncertain, but it will have been determined by the availablity of an inpatient bed.

Please accept our apologies for the time it took to transfer your husband to a ward, I hope he is now recovering from his heart attack.

With best wishes,

Cathy White
