I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last summer at the age of 53.
The news was initially quite a shock but from being diagnosed in the morning by my GP, I had an appointment that very afternoon at the diabetic unit and was seen by a number of professionals.
In the space of an afternoon I blood tests done, was given diet advice by a dietician, assigned my own diabetic specialist nurse who showed me how to use the equipment I needed to manage my condition and taken through my first injection.
I have since had a number of reviews with the nursing team and I am managing my condition very well due in no small part to the help and support of this excellent team at Sunderland Royal.
Well done!
I wish I could say the same about my experience with the A&E dept. but that's another story!
