What I liked
I was in hospital for a gynae operation and it was a wholly positive experience. The surgeon and anaesthetist took time and trouble to explain the procedure,. and as I had, on their recommendation, a spinal injection and was awake throughout, it was interesting - and totally unfrightening - to be lept posted by the brilliant anaesthatist as to what was happening during the op. Both these doctors and their entire team in the theatre and in recovery were wonderful, working as a team with efficiancy and skill, but always with humour and the sort of banter that makes the patient feel safe, a part of what is going on. Then I was taken to ward 209 - how marvellous to be fetched by friendly porters on the bed from the ward, so no unnecessary transfers. I was made welcome, treated warmly and efficiently, and very quickly felt at home. Staff, again using great teamwork, created a lovely atmosphere in the ward, I was always able to ask questions and get considered and thoughtful answers. The food was excellent and I appreciated the little extras like ice cold water and hot drinks freely available in the corridor. I spent three days in a first class hotel with nursing care added, I was sorry when it was time to come home!
What could be improved
Nothing of any importance. One small suggestion. It was only towards the end of my stay that anyone mentioned the hot drinks available in the corridor of the ward. Maybe a handout with this sort of information, and how to work the TV system etc., might prevent patients not getting to know, and/or avoid busy staff having to remember it all.
This was a wholly good experience, and I would especially like to thank all the staff involved, in the theatre, in recovery and in ward 209.
