"My son not getting right help."

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital / Adolescent Psychiatry Ayrshire Central Hospital / Child Psychiatry Ayrshire Central Hospital / General Psychiatry Three Towns Resource Centre / General Psychiatry

(as a parent/guardian),

My son suffered a breakdown about 3 years ago now. Perhaps brought on by his mothers sudden death 5 years previously.

He attended CAMHS. They reckoned with him talking to himself and scared that the voices he heard was going to harm him, that he had Psychosis. During this time they also concluded that he has Autism. He attended appointments with CAMHS psychiatrist numerous times with myself my partner and my aunt. Medication was helping slightly. Talking to himself but not as frequent or as aggressive.

The problem really started once he moved to adult services at Three Towns Resource Centre. The first time the Dr reckoned the meds were doing fine and the talking is his autism. Told to see the Dr again in 9 months and keep taking pills. Said I wasn't happy and it got changed to 6 months.

Well my son talks, laughs and does voices to himself at every opportunity he can. Usually in the toilet where he locks door and draws blind. It is very loud and worrying. He's even said "I've killed before and got away with it and I can again" to himself.

So we went a couple of weeks ago to see psychiatrist. We arrived 10 mins early, then waited 45 mins, when my son was called in. 10 min later he was back out. I asked what was happening. The Dr had asked how he was doing. He replied he was great and that he’d almost stopped the talking. So the dr said, good, told him to keep taking the pills, and said that they’d see him in 6 months.

I find this totally unbelievable and unacceptable where no-one else is asked how he is doing. Also, in my opinion, there is no sort of assessment of his mental state. What makes it all very worrying, and part of reason I'm writing this is, this morning he was doing his talking/yelling and when I got out bed (working nightshift) he had that much anger. I was a ****. And " I will stab you" got yelled at me. 20 mins later and as I write this he has calmed down again and very quiet.

I don't know where to turn anymore but feel 100% the resource centre is failing my son and bordering, if not already, useless. In my opinion, this psychiatrist hasn't assessed or tested him in anyway. Keep taking pills and maybe next visit the Dr can say all is well and that's another one of the mental illness list.

Very sad and very sad for my son who needs better help than this. Going back to bed as I'm nightshift. Not that I'll sleep much.

Dear Scared worried dad,

A senior manager of the Mental Health Team had a look into this for you. In order to maintain confidentiality and your son's anonymity, you will receive a letter shortly in response.

I really hope things are going well and you and your son feel that healing is in process.

best wishes,

Eunice
