"Admitted with Pneumonia"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Accident and emergency

I was brought in by ambulance after experiencing breathing difficulties and was sat on a chair after being booked in by the paramedics. I spent the next two hours watching others sat in the same row of chairs, having blood pressure and temperature taken, questioned about their complaints and ultimately moved on, this included two teenage girls who were in and out having cigarette breaks and a drunk who could not sit up. At no point during this time was I spoken to or even eye contact made. My breathing was getting worse and out of desperation I asked a nurse if they would take my blood pressure. The nurse made it clear in their manner that I was a nuisance and at that point I had had enough. My husband had been waiting all this time and I felt my only option at this point was to try and seek help elsewhere. I went to find my husband and for the first time I was spoken to by the staff who convinced me to return. I was then put on oxygen and nebulisers. I was seen by a nurse practitioner who gave me a capsule of antibiotic and I was admitted on to acute ward. During the night I deteriorated and was started on i.v. antibiotics after a nurse called a doctor to examine me. I remained in hospital for nine days. I cannot help thinking that had any of the staff bothered to speak to me they would have seen how ill I was and I would have been reassured instead of wondering if they knew I was even there at all.

Dear Elaine Cudsi

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent visit to our Hospital and we are sorry to hear that on this occasion your experience of our Emergency Department was negative.

I have shared your comments with the Matron for that area and she has asked me to respond by sharing the below comment.

‘Thank you very much for comprehensively documenting your experience of the Emergency Department. It was so disappointing to read of the negative points you raise relating to Attitude, Waiting times, and delay to assessment. I appreciate that this must have made a difficult time even worse. I would like to apologise for the experience you had whilst in our Department.

For a patient to experience poor treatment in the department is unacceptable and I would like to assure you this is not up to the standard that staff aspire to.

We are very sorry that you were left feeling that you were not assessed in a timely manner. Your feedback will be shared with the ED staff. We do hope that you are making a good recovery.

We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your experience with you and you can contact the PALS Services on 01202 704886 if you would like to do this.’

Once again please accept our apologies for your negative experience under difficult circumstances for you and your husband and we hope you are now on the road to recovery.

Regards

Patient Engagement Team
