"Utterly horrendous. I blame you for my baby's..."

About: University College Hospital

I'd tell anybody to avid if you have healthy pregnanyI understand what draws many people to UCLH is their services if anything is to go wrong, I hear the labour ward is well-equipped. I got to UCLH at 3cm dilated and was told I have to be 4cm to get room (fair enough, I was due to be in the birthing suite). I was made to feel stupid that I'd come in when I was 'only 3cm' ..how was I to know? I was always calm, silently breathing through contractions. After a few hours of walking round the antenatal unit (in the middle of a weekday morning where every pregnant lady was gorping at me struggling during labour.. I've never felt more like a chimpanzee at a zoo, it was so disrespectful of the midwives I believe to not offer for me just to sit in one of the many little empty examination rooms) a midwife approached me and began walking round the hospital with me, giving advice on how to cope with the contractions. They were great, the first friendly midwife I encountered that day. They knew my contractions were 3 minutes apart, 1 minute long and had been for some time. At the antenatal classes you are told that this is when you should be in a room, gas & air etc. I was told to go home after they asked me how far away I lived (over an hour), and told to come back in 6 hours!!!! Needless to say as soon as I got home the baby wanted to come. We rang the unit back and the midwife there told me to wait for another 2 hours before coming back in. At this point I gave up with UCLH as they had been so rude to us. We had to ring an ambulance as my baby was coming. 9 minutes on the phone until the paramedics arrived, in this time the person on the phone had directed my partner in delivering our baby. 0 help from UCLH. 0 monitoring of my baby through the entire birth or labour process. We are still so in the dark about how our son coped during labour but suspect it wasn't well as we were sent to A&E by a local midwife when he was one day old with an undiagnosed infection which we think is down to the lack of monitoring both before and after he was born. Our experience was so stressful. We didn't get any of the screenings you are supposed to receive for a newborn before you leave hospital, we had to fight everybody for the tiniest thing that with a hospital birth is pretty standard. Not only do I not recommend UCLH, I would warn anyone to stay clear. The antenatal service was like a conveyor belt, if you haven't got anything 'wrong' with you, they take no notice. I should have listened to the signs straight away to go elsewhere. The scans are so rushed, they don't take the time to check the baby properly at all. They ask you basic questions and make assumptions based on your answers. You'll get a much better service outside of the city I think. I thought the antenatal service here was normal and just 'London' but the postnatal service at Watford was outstanding so that's no excuse. I believe it is the fault of the UCL midwives for our newborn being so very ill.
