"11 weeks surgical treatment"

About: BPAS Streatham CC/Clinic

When I went in for my initial consultation appointment I had no clue I was anywhere near 11 weeks. The day itself went very quick and the staff was amazing. My treatment was 4 days later, and I had mentally prepared myself regarding how long I'd be there for. I walked into the waiting room with my partner, there were a lot of people there, not all the ladies were patients, many were there for support so don't be overwhelmed. Ladies do not expect to be out in 2 hrs, the waiting times were absolutely ridiculous, my app was scheduled for 11:40 and I was not seen till 13:40 for my admission. Being hungry for 14 hours now I had taken 2 sips of water and when I mentioned this the nurse told me I would not be seen for another 2 hours, but i agreed as it had to be done. I saw and overheard ladies that they also had to wait 2 hours and many of them were called in on time. I wasn't called in till 5:45PM! at this rate I could have had breakfast in the morning. I was annoyed but I know the staff was doing the best they could, but some ladies who came in after me were seen way before me so I was not happy about that. After such a long day I wasn't expecting to be made to be so comfortable like the way I was. The nurses and doctors were very nice and helped me relax as I went through general anaesthetic. All i can remember is the ceiling of the theatre. I did not feel a thing. I was later taken to recovery which went very smoothly, i was hardly bleeding, takes a while for the drowsiness to wear off, you are given some time to relax, with light refreshments to gain some energy.. Discharge again took a while but it only meant I got more time to recover at the clinic, it was now around 8pm, a very long day indeed. Ladies, remember everyone is different so don't fall for the negative reviews. The hard part for me was waiting which I do believe BPAS needs to improve considerably, as many ladies are sitting there hungry for god knows how long. Can I also mention, a patient was told she was allowed to have a bite of food and a few sips of water just half an hour before she was called in, and I had to wait 4 hours due to 2 sips? I know a lot of people are scared of the general, but in my opinion it just helps you go through the process much more quicker and easier, as you are asleep, you don't see or hear what is going. Overall, the procedure was very very quick, its mainly the waiting i was very unimpressed by being scheduled for 11:40 and not being seen till 5:45pm and the fact that i was hungry for 20 hours. My partner kept going to get an update on how long it would take and he felt like he was given a 'what do you want me to do about it' attitude. Apart from that the staff were very nice and helpful and you are made to feel comfortable.

At BPAS we pride ourselves on the quality of care we provide and although you should not be expected to wait for prolonged periods of time, this is sometimes unavoidable in a healthcare setting.

In some circumstances it may be clinically necessary for a client to be seen more urgently than yourself, even if they arrived at the clinic after you.

However, I am very sorry if this was not fully explained to you and if your partner did not receive appropriate updates.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback, we are very grateful for your comments which I can assure you will be passed on to the clinic manager.

Kind regards, Pam Field, BPAS Client Engagement Manager (email: clientservices@bpas.org).
