"I know it's a little thing but I like to wear perfume"

About: St Andrew's Healthcare Birmingham / Moor Green

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Staff are supportive on the ward and attend to my needs if they are available. I get on well with the patients and the new peers. I would like to thank E – I get on well with her.

There is a new change on my ward that doesn’t meet my needs. We have to request to have perfume on. It is frustrating as even when perfume is requested it doesn’t happen. I am very frustrated.

I ask at the morning meeting, I don’t get it and staff are always saying later. This means I go all day without being able to have any perfume. This is the same for all the patients on my ward. I know it’s a little thing but I like being able to wear my perfume.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It is wonderful to hear that the staff on your ward are supportive and attend to your needs. I was concerned to hear about the changes regarding access to perfume which do not meet your needs.

We are trying to reduce practices that are restrictive and ensure that our approach is personalised to individuals. I have spoken to the Operational Manager who agrees that this should be looked at on an individual basis and he will follow this up.

Can I also encourage you to raise this at your next Care Plan Update meeting and to use the advocate to help you raise your views if this would be helpful. I will also highlight this issue with the team.

Best wishes

We have listened and changed our previous practice. I am extremely pleased to hear that you also raised this issue at your ward round and that you now receive your perfume. Well done.

Sophia
