About: Bolton NHS Foundation Trust

I had a negative experience having my contraceptive implant removed. As soon as I sat down I was immediately talked down to and the doctor made many assumptions about my situation: I was told that it was a bad idea, I was young and didn't want to get pregnant in the near future (I'm in my 20s, what if I do?), and that there was no reason to have it removed if I wasn't experiencing negative side effects. What should have been a simple procedure and and an open conversation, turned into me feeling backed into a corner and forced to explain myself on what is a very personal decision. I felt judged and do not want people, especially those younger than me accessing contraception for the first time, going here and being treated like that. Doctors, particularly in this department, need to be open minded, calm and non-judgemental in their approach. I will say that the nurses here have always been fantastic and I've had better treatment in the past, so I'm hoping this was an isolated incident. Regardless I will go elsewhere in future.

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry on this occasion you had a negative experience seeing one of our doctors and that you were not happy with the service you received when coming to have your implant removed.

All our staff do ask questions to assess the reasons for implant removal, sometimes if it is due to side effects we can support the management of these .

We also routinely enquire about future contraceptive needs as we are keen to support the prevention of any unwanted pregnancies .

However I completely agree that any questions we ask must be asked in a way that does not make you feel ‘backed into a corner ‘ or judged about your decision .

Providing a non-judgemental service is very important to us.

I will share the feedback of your experience with the whole team at the next staff meeting and quality group forum so that everyone is reminded how important the way that we communicate with our patients is ,and that it is important that they feel at ease in coming to see any of our team.

If you can provide your details confidentially that would allow us to speak specifically to the staff member concerned you saw when we came for your appointment in August.

If you would like to contact me or the service matron to discuss this further then please contact either :

Lesley-anne Doxsey , Service Manager or Renata Hewart, Matron, on 01204 390142
