"I left the appointment feeling like a cloud had lifted"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

My GP referred me to EFREC after experiencing problems trying to conceive.

I was really nervous about attending and I don't know why but I had built up in my mind that I was going to be told that the problems were my fault, or I wasn't doing something properly. I was put at ease first by the lady at reception who was warm and welcoming. Then my partner and I were taken into a room by Evelyn* who was just so lovely and she chatted away and made us laugh while she took our height, weight and blood pressure. Next Dr Duncan came and took us into another room to have our consultation. When you're in your thirties you think you probably know how you ovulate and what needs to happen to conceive but Dr Duncan didn't make any assumptions. He clearly explained the basics without making us feel stupid and after going through our history and current situation, he was able to say with some certainty what he thought the problem was, and most importantly, that he thought it would be relatively easy to solve.

He did a scan to confirm what he thought and based on that clearly discussed the next steps with us. The nurse/care support workers who were there for the scan and then in the last room where we discussed what to do next were also both lovely friendly and helpful. They made sure I knew what steps to take and told us to call if we had any queries at all.

I left the appointment feeling like a cloud had lifted and immediately started to feel positive about conceiving again.

I know there's no guarantees with this but I'm so grateful to have access to this type of treatment and the experts who can help.

*I'm almost certain her name was Evelyn.

And I'm so sorry I've forgotten the names of the other two nurses/care support workers who we saw, and the lady at reception, I should have written them down!

Dear cannong

Thank you very much for your feedback following your consultation at your EFREC appointment. I was really pleased to hear how Dr Duncan and the nursing staff were able to put you and your partner at ease by explaining things to you both so that you know what the next steps will be and who you should contact if you had any queries.

I have passed your kind words back to the team who I am sure will be delighted this feedback.

As you say, there are no guarantees but I will keep my fingers crossed for you and your partner.

Kind regards

Jeannette

Update posted by cannong (the patient)

Hello,

I just wanted to post an update to say thank you again to the wonderful team at EFREC.

For the last few months I've been a regular visitor. I've had a couple of follow up appointments with Dr Duncan and each time he was straightforward and clear about what his plans were and what would be happening, making changings to medication etc. I've lost count of the number of times I've been in for blood tests and scans but it's all been worthwhile, this morning I was discharged from EFREC after having a successful 7 week pregnancy scan. The relief of seeing a wee heartbeat fluttering was amazing and momentarily stopped me feel nauseous!

The Red Team, specifically Alison, Evelyn and Liz, have all been so supportive and lovely throughout my time with the clinic. They make a sometimes very difficult situation much more bearable, and even pleasant at times! Thank you very much, you are wonderful!

Two of my best friends are also currently pregnant after successful IVF treatments at EFREC. We are hugely grateful and appreciate that in Scotland we are so so lucky to have such fantastic fertility services available to us.

THANK YOU :)

Congratulations on being 7 weeks pregnant. You must be very excited having attended EFREC for quite some time.

I will share your feedback with Dr Duncan and the Red Team who will be delighted that their caring approach made your difficult situation more bearable and even pleasant.

I hope your nausea settles and that you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.
