"Hip replacement"

About: Withybush General Hospital Withybush General Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I have reecently had a full hip replacement in Withybush and, as far as these things can be, it was far from an unpleasant experience.

From the time I arrived in the Same Day Admissions Unit I was kept informed of progress and had no worries about any aspect of the procedure, so much so that I stuck to my original decision not to have a general anaesthetic although I could have changed my mind right up till the anaesthetic was administered.

There was no bed on Ward 1, the orthoepaedic ward, so I was put on Ward 3. The care and consideration could not have been better. There was never a time when I felt a nuisance, my welfare was always their main consideration. Add that to the visits from the OTs and Physiotherapists and the whole experience was as "enjoyable" as a hospital stay following an operation can be.

There was only one, minor problem. This was that, because of the type of operation, I had to have the use of a raised toilet seat and although there was on one Ward 3, I had to manouever it over the toilet every time I had to use it. I assume, though don't know for sure, that this is a permanant feature on Ward 1. Still, as this was my only problem, it didn't detract from the overall experience.

I am now at home and recovering well.

Keep up the good work Withybush.
