"Avoid at all costs- maternity services"

About: University College Hospital

The treatment we received at the Early Pregnancy Unit at UCLH was so bad I cannot even begin to put it into words, but I will try so that others can avoid the pathetic excuse for "patient care" that this hospital attempts to provide. My partner unfortunately had a miscarriage that we discovered a few days before our 12 week scan, she had bleeding and we went in to get it checked out. The staff were extremely rude and dismissive, and a lot of people were quite vocal in their complaints in the waiting area. We were waiting for hours, and the staff member behind the desk was one of the most ignorant and rude individuals I have ever had the misfortune of encountering, I am very surprised that this person is front of house for people who are here because of issues with their pregnancy, it is beyond belief. When we got the bad news that unfortunately there was no longer a heartbeat we were told we have to wait another week 'to be sure' (by the only people we encountered during the entire experience who were any way sympathetic and supportive, the consultant and the nurse in this occasion) and then were pretty much marched out of there. We had to go back a week later to be told the same thing, by one of the coldest people I have ever encountered. No "I'm sorry" or any sympathy, just a yeah, go out and book in your procedure, it's a bank holiday, you'll probably have to wait a week and again marched out like we were in the way. A week later we were back again for the procedure, day surgery, long and emotional day for my partner, again the patient care was so bad that I wonder how this hospital gets away with it. They did some test on the foetal tissue apparently and we were told this would be back with us in the form of a letter. We are still waiting for this letter 7 weeks later. We called a few times and eventually got to speak to someone who said everything was normal, and that if it's normal they generally don't contact people. Absolutely disgusted with this treatment. Avoid this hospital at all costs. If you wanted to be treated like a dog by staff who are rude and dismissive then by all means go here. But in reality, it's no better than what I imagine third world healthcare to be like.

Thank you for taking the time to feed back to us. We are very sorry to hear about your recent experience in the Early Pregnancy Unit. We would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) quoting ref: 1150 via pals@uclh.nhs.uk or by calling 020 3447 3042 so that we can look into this.
