My Stay On Ward 9Y

On 20/09/2016 I arrived as a planned admission to Ward 9Y at 4.00pm following a CT scan, having been asked to delay my arrival from the morning.

Unfortunately a bed was not available until 8.00pm as no-one had been available to ‘deep clean’ it. For most of the 4 hours I sat in the waiting area (not the most comfortable). I was to be on the ward early for a course of alpha and beta blockers which would prepare me for the operation to remove a Pheochromocytoma from my left adrenal gland.

Once settled on the ward I cannot fault the care and attention afforded me by all the staff, from the Consultant right through to the catering & cleaning staff. The manager of the ward was efficient and cheerful.

For the bulk of my stay, because of my condition, I was fortunate enough to be accommodated in a side room. Where once again my care was faultless. The consultant and their Registrar visited daily to check on my condition, and staff were unfailingly professional and personable. The Junior doctors were kind and attentive; I was impressed and comforted by their bedside manner. The nursing team looked after me, and kept me supplied with a seemingly endless supply of drinking water in preparation for my operation.

They were also kind and professional in their work.

I have to compliment the catering on the ward! What a selection of meals, I think I ate most of the mains during my stay and was not disappointed by the quality nor quantity - RLUH should be very proud of their food and the staff preparing and serving it.

Although the fabric of the ward was a little tired and worn, the cleaning staff really worked at keeping it clean and safe. One in particular should be congratulated for their efforts not only to clean the ward but also for their pleasant and bright attitude with the patients.

My surgery was more complicated than expected, and once again I was impressed by the quality of my care. Following surgery I was in the High Dependency Unit where again the team on the unit were faultless. I returned to Ward 9Y a day later.

I remained in hospital from the 20th - 30th October, and I can honestly say that the care I received was excellent, and would like to thank all those at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital for their care.
