"Treatment of my wife in ward 21."

About: Monklands District General Hospital / Care of the Elderly

(as a service user),

Having read some (2)letters of praise for Ward 21, I have to say that this does not in any way correspond to what my wife experienced in this ward. I feel that the treatment received was a total disgrace with uncaring nursing staff who appeared to be more interested in chatting to each other than attending to the patients. One example was my daughter visited my wife at 3pm one day and found her slumped in a chair. On enquiring at the nursing station as to WHEN she had been placed there, no one could give an answer, but they said they would attend to the matter. My daughter then left. Another daughter went up at 7pm same day to find my wife STILL slumped in the chair. On confronting the nursing staff they all had various excuses as to why "it was not their fault". My wife could not speak or swallow and was fed by tube so she could not get their attention although she was in a single room ABOUT 10 feet AWAY, I. e. the nearest room to the nursing station and clearly in view.

In fairness I have to say that a few of the staff DID show some care and concern, but the overall ambience of this ward was very much below the standard required. This story is part of a complete report re Monklands Hospital which I am in the process of compiling.

Same old story. Hand wringing after complaints but nothing changes. No one actually held to account from top to bottom.
