I had cause to telephone one of the Hospitals run by this trust tonight because a patient on Day Release really lost control of their emotional state when they had to return to hospital. I was told I had to speak to Acute Services. I was put through but the person there told me to ring back and ask to be put through to one of the Female Wards because they couldn't do it. I did call back but was told they couldn't put me through to any of the Wards and was asked to give my reason for asking. I gave precise details that the person was out on home leave for the day and had to go back. regrettably when the Taxi arrived they had an episode and the Taxi Driver refused to take them. The next Taxi refused to take them. I wanted to alert the hospital as time was getting on and they still had no way to get back. I was then told "the patient" couldn't possibly be attending that hospital because they live in York. I assured them that they were in that hospital as I visited myself. The conversation got strained and I asked if they were actually telling me that they would rather I contacted the Police because the next step for the Hospital is to obtain a warrant for the Patients return. I was told that is probably the best thing. I did that and guess what? The Patient was returned to the very hospital I was told would not have had them as a patient because they didn't live in the catchment area.

I am sorry to hear that contact with Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS services wasn’t a positive experience for you.

As you rightly say, due to the closure of Bootham Park Hospital ,York Adult inpatient service users are currently receiving acute in patient care out of their own locality, in one of the trusts other hospital sites. However, there are still community services in York including an intensive home treatment service who can provide additional support to service users during periods of crisis or on extended periods of leave from the ward. These services are able to support people in the community in times of crisis, like which you have described below, and these could be used to support service user’s. We are sorry that this information was not made available to you and for future reference you can locate these numbers on our trust home page if you google TEWV NHS.

In addition at each hospital site there will be a manager in and out of hours who you could ask to speak with who should be able to offer help and guidance.
