Sadly my brother's condition resulted in him receiving palliative care. He was moved to his own room with en suite toilet. I was encouraged to stay with him and the staff were as concerned for my welfare too. Nothing was too much trouble. All staff from cleaners to senior nurses showed respect, professionalism, great empathy and wonderful caring to both of us. Whilst nobody likes hospital food I have to say that in the scheme of things it was very good and with great choice. I was able to have tea and a snack at anytime, including the middle of the night. Even ice lollies were available to refresh my brothers mouth when he was unable to eat or drink much. i was given a parking pass which alleviate the stress of worrying about the parking fees etc.
I was alone with my brother at the end and I am grateful to the nurse who held my hand all the way to the exit when I left the ward following his death.
I have had the misfortune to be in the front line of caring for several relatives during their palliative care and I can say that the care at Turner Ward is exceptional. The only problem I did have was when I had to go to the car park out of hours. It was initially difficult to find my way out of the hospital and the car parks are not well lit late at night which was a littl frightening.
"Turner Ward could not have been more caring"
