"Hand gel in the eye department"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital

Well done Bournemouth Eye Department, every hand gel machine had hand gel in it. This is a 100% improvement from last year.

Unfortunately many people were just not using them.

Response from Royal Bournemouth General Hospital

Dear ‘New Forester’

Thank you for your observation and comment. I do recall some feedback last February about hand gel machines being left empty in the Eye Unit. This was reported to the Housekeeping manager immediately and a change in practice was set in motion the next day and we are pleased you noted this is still effective a year down the line.

It was also noted at that time about the number of signs and posters warning of the importance of hand hygiene and we do everything we can to encourage this good practice. Unfortunately it is not physically possible to insist that every visitor, patient and indeed staff member carry out this good practice.

We will continue to encourage effective hand hygiene to all visitors to the site. I thank you for highlighting this very important issue and hope that others reading this post will be vigilant of their own hand hygiene to prevent the spread of infection.
