What I liked
some very kind nurses, great consultant and doctors in general were very caring considering it was a terminal diagnosis
What could be improved
some of the junior doctors seemed inexperienced in dealing with a terminal diagnosis. they accused my mum of being in denial that she was going to die. the other patients in the ward were the biggest problem, it was like a zoo. there was no division between the aggressive patients, often alcoholics from the nearby green, who caused havoc for the patients more seriously ill as my mum was. there were a lot of arguments, people drinking vodka in the toilets, patients lighting up cigarettes in the ward. the nurses got involved with a paranoid tirade from another patient directed towards my mum, and they dealt with it very badly. palliative nurses were good when we finally got them but there were too many transitions of staff, my mum saw a consultant, doctors, oncologist, 'transition' nurse, and palliative care nurse. they also seemed quite unused to the idea of a patient going to a hospice and it was only because we investigated ourselves and insisted that mum went to st josephs. as an advanced cancer patient, homerton didnt offer us an option other than going home for her to die.
